Below, I’ve put together a weekend itinerary highlighting some of the best experiences across Destin, Miramar Beach, and Okaloosa Island to help you plan ahead and make the most of your time.

Let’s jump in!

Colorful waterfront buildings and restaurants at Destin Harbor overlook rows of docked boats and charter vessels on a sunny day with a clear blue sky.

Friday Evening: Sunset at Destin Harbor Boardwalk

Start your Emerald Coast getaway in the heart of Destin at the lively
harbor district, where you’ll find restaurants, fishing boats, boutiques, and entertainment venues lining the waterfront, as well as great spots to watch a stunning Florida sunset. Street performers and musicians add a festive vibe to the area.

After watching the sun set over the Gulf, choose one of the excellent restaurants along the Destin Harbor Boardwalk for a seafood extravaganza. Some top options include:

  • Boshamps Seafood & Oyster House
  • Harbor Docks
  • Dewey Destin’s Seafood Restaurant
  • AJ’s Seafood & Oyster Bar

After dinner, continue the evening with a relaxed walk along the harbor. If you’re with kids in tow, stop by the arcade or mini golf course.

During your time here, you’ll likely return more than once, since the Destin Harbor Boardwalk serves as a launch point for dolphin cruises, parasailing trips, snorkeling tours, and sunset sails, some of the most popular activities in Destin.

Saturday Morning: Breakfast and Beach Time in Destin

Mornings on the Emerald Coast should start with a dose of energy to fuel a day spent exploring all the beauty and fun things the region has to offer.

One excellent place to start the day before heading out to enjoy the beaches is The Donut Hole Bakery Café. Since 1978, this Destin favorite has been serving classic Southern breakfasts and hearty omelets alongside fresh pastries and its famous oversized donuts.

Once breakfast wraps up, it’s time to hit the beach. Head to Crystal Beach, one of the most scenic stretches of shoreline in Destin. The neighborhood blends quiet residential streets with wide beaches and calm, crystal-clear water where you can spend the morning relaxing on the sand or dipping into the Gulf.

Saturday Afternoon: Discover Okaloosa Island

Just a short drive west of Destin,
Okaloosa Island is one of the Emerald Coast’s most beautiful coastal areas. The island stretches along a narrow barrier between Choctawhatchee Bay and the Gulf, offering beautiful beaches and attractions. Here’s a good way to build up your afternoon on Okaloosa:

  • A great first stop is Okaloosa Island Pier, where locals and visitors gather for fishing and panoramic views of the Gulf. Walk along the pier, where you’ll get lovely sea views, and if you keep your eyes open, you might even spot dolphins swimming nearby.

  • Continue the afternoon with a visit to Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park, a long-running marine park that focuses on education and wildlife conservation. This is especially a hit among the little ones traveling with you. You’ll see dolphins, sea lions, turtles, penguins, and tropical fish through daily presentations and exhibits.

Saturday Evening: Dinner Along Scenic Gulf Drive

After a full afternoon on beautiful Okaloosa Island, return toward Destin or Miramar Beach for dinner along Scenic Gulf Drive. This coastal road runs parallel to the shoreline and offers some of the most beautiful waterfront dining spots in the region.

One standout choice is Surf Hut, located right on the beach with sweeping Gulf views. The casual atmosphere pairs perfectly with sunset dining. Make sure to order some of the stars of the menu, including coconut shrimp, blackened fish tacos, grouper sandwiches, and fresh Gulf seafood platters.

Another excellent option nearby is Pompano Joe’s, a long-time Emerald Coast restaurant serving Caribbean-inspired seafood dishes with colorful beachside décor.

Aerial view of Topsail Hill Preserve State Park with bright white sand dunes, scattered greenery, and calm turquoise Gulf waters fading into deep blue offshore.

Sunday Morning: Breakfast in Miramar Beach

Rise early and head east toward Miramar Beach for the final day of your weekend escape. Start the morning at
Bad Ass Coffee of Hawaii, a local favorite for strong espresso drinks and relaxed breakfast bites. The café serves Hawaiian-inspired coffee blends alongside pastries and breakfast sandwiches, providing plenty of energy for the day ahead.

After breakfast, drive over to Topsail Hill Preserve State Park, one of the most pristine natural areas along the Emerald Coast. This outdoor playground protects several miles of untouched shoreline, along with rare coastal dune lakes, forested trails, paved cycling paths, and beautiful wildlife.

Sunday Afternoon: Henderson Beach State Park

For your final afternoon outdoors on the Emerald Coast, head to
Henderson Beach State Park for more nature immersion in what’s considered home to some of the most beautiful shoreline in the region. Beyond swimming in clear Gulf waters, you can also enjoy stunning white dunes, nature trails, and picnicking beneath shaded pavilions.

Sunday Evening: Baytowne Wharf

Wrap up the weekend with a lively evening at
The Village of Baytowne Wharf inside Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort. This charming waterfront village is filled with restaurants, shops, live music, and family-friendly entertainment throughout the week.

For dining in style, here are some great ops:

  • Slick Lips Seafood & Oyster House
  • Hammerhead’s Bar & Grille

After dinner, stroll around the village and enjoy the high-energy vibe. Depending on the evening, you may see live bands, fireworks shows, street performers, or seasonal festivals. For family-friendly fun, stop by the adventure zone or arcade, or, if you’re on a romantic vacation, grab cocktails overlooking the marina.

Sunday Evening Alternative: Dinner at Your Vacation Rental

Here’s a good alternative if you prefer to chill and take it easy on your last night. If you’re staying in one of the beautiful vacation rentals in
Destin or Miramar Beach, why not take advantage of their well-equipped kitchens and cook with your vacation crew? Destin sits near several excellent seafood markets where you can pick up freshly caught Gulf fish and shrimp and cook them the way you want. This is also a great way to strengthen the bonds with your loved ones and create great memories.

Local markets worth visiting include:

  • Sexton Seafood Market
  • Destin Ice Seafood Market
  • Blalock Seafood Market

Extra Tips for Making the Most of a Weekend on the Emerald Coast

Start early, especially on beach days

Mornings are one of the best times to enjoy Destin’s beaches. Temperatures are cooler, the water tends to be calmer, and popular spots like Crystal Beach or Henderson Beach State Park are quieter before late morning crowds arrive.

Use Scenic Gulf Drive instead of Highway 98 when possible

Scenic Gulf Drive connects Destin and Miramar Beach with beautiful coastal views and far less traffic than the main highway. It also puts you closer to beach access points, restaurants, and beachfront cafés.

Plan sunset moments each evening

Sunsets are one of the highlights of the Emerald Coast. Destin Harbor Boardwalk, Scenic Gulf Drive restaurants, Okaloosa Island Pier, and Baytowne Wharf all provide excellent sunset viewpoints.

Mix beach time with local attractions

Spending the entire day at the beach can be tempting, but combining beach stops with places like Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park or the Harbor Boardwalk gives your itinerary more variety and keeps the weekend feeling fresh.

Pack a small beach kit in your car

Keep sunscreen, water, a towel, and flip-flops in the car so you can spontaneously stop at beach access points during drives between Destin, Miramar Beach, and Okaloosa Island.

Reserve popular restaurants in advance

Restaurants along Scenic Gulf Drive and around Destin Harbor can get busy on weekends. Booking a table in advance helps avoid long waits, especially during sunset hours.

A modern three-story white beach house with blue shutters features a fenced backyard with a rectangular pool, spa, lounge chairs, and palm trees, set beneath a colorful sunset sky in a coastal neighborhood.
